In this first evening concert, Goerne and Eschenbach (on piano) performed Schubert's Die schöne Müllerin. This particular cycle is about a miller's apprentice who falls in love with the miller's daughter. It's a tragic tale really as she prefers a hunter, which then leads the miller wanting to take his own life. Goerne and Eschenbach successfully and beautifully present an intimate concert, bringing the audience into a story of the rise and fall of love. But also, it is a story about the miller's consistent relationship with nature where ultimately he finds his most constant companionship. We feel the range of emotion in this story from Goerne's voice and Eschenbach's playing as each part of the story falls into place.
Goerne and Eschenbach return with their Recital II for Schubert's Winterreise on Wednesday, April 18th and will also perform Schubert's Symphony No. 9 with the Los Angeles Philharmonic from April 20th-22nd. Members of the LA Philharmonic will also be presenting an evening of Chamber Music on April 17th as part of the Sublime Schubert series.
